ㅤonly in darkness may we see clearly.ㅤㅤOn nights where the moon is all but visible, should you be lurking around mirrored pools and places of great power, you may catch a glimpse of figures garbed in black, invisible against the cloak of night.The Keepers of the Dark Moon operate in small numbers, meeting only on the longest night of the year, during the new moon. It is extremely rare to come in contact with one and know what they are, and especially so to return alive with the information.Characterized by their black markings and thick fur, they don't stand out much in a crowd if you're not looking. The only time you'd see them venturing into city-states or making outside contact is on their own, never in a greater number than two. The ones you may come in contact with are odd creatures indeed: oftentimes they have luminous eyes, are marked with strange scars that must have led to certain death, and have aether that's far too dense for their soul alone. They're typically heavily armed, and can more often be found trespassing in places of power.None have ever been caught alive. Every member seems to carry some manner of poison, to be deployed in situations where one might be forced to spill their secrets.

The Keepers of the Dark Moon can trace their lineage back to the icy peaks in Meracydia, who were kidnapped from their homeland during the days of the Allagan Empire. While many of their kin were sent to till the fields or perform other types of manual labour, the female Miqo'te who would become their matriarch worked as a kept servant within the high houses of ancient Allag.ㅤShe was privy to many hidden secrets, given that her master worked deep within the labs of the Emperor. Her master had taught her to read — "What use is a handmaid who can't read?"— which left her plenty of time during the day to rifle through documents. The knowledge she found there — the knowledge that other planes existed — became the core tenet of a way she believed could preserve her people.ㅤDuring one of many uprisings, she escaped; the arduous journey back to the remnant of her broken clan was worth it entirely as they journeyed to a new land. Now able to recover with a new faith in hand, the now-Matriarch led their clan into the shadows, nameless except to those who knew them.Not much is known about their activities after the initial crossing; they disappeared into the wind, operating quietly, discovering new and strange rituals. Malinaea was housed within the main branch of her clan, which meant she was moved from stronghold to stronghold growing up, learning how to survive and adapt to nearly every type of biome on the star. She's a veritable expert when it comes to the outdoors, knowledgeable in all manners of survival techniques.

While Malinaea offers services in regular tattooing (both traditional and mechanical), her expertise lay elsewhere.Aetherically-charged tattooing was a method very specific to her clan — Awakening requires intense ritual, which in turn requires the Dreamer to channel more aether than their body can handle, often of a harmful nature. The tattoos acted as a focus, mitigating the effects, and marking the newly Awoken as what they were. This technique is also useful for those who study the arcane arts — often augmenting spellcasting like leylines might — though it's rare for someone to ask about it.
